U.S. Treasury to Release Guidance on Hydrogen Tax Credits

The U.S. Treasury Department plans to release guidance later this week on accessing the hydrogen production tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, according to two Reuters sources familiar with the matter.

The much-anticipated guidance will provide a way for hydrogen energy produced through nuclear energy to qualify for those tax credits. However, specific details of the program have not been disclosed.

Whether existing nuclear power plants should be eligible for hydrogen energy subsidies has been a contentious issue in the rule. Environmentalists have argued that only hydrogen energy produced using new, cleaner energy sources should be eligible for these credits.

One of the people familiar with the matter mentioned that the guidance could be released on Friday. The U.S. Treasury Department has not yet commented on the matter.
