Energiequelle to launch first hydrogen energy project in Finland

Energiequelle Finland, part of German energy company Energiquelle, has received planning permission from the Municipality of Oulu, Finland, for the Oulu Green Hydrogen Park project, reports Offshore Energy Netherlands.

The first phase of the company’s first public hydrogen project in Finland includes the construction of a hydrogen plant with an installed capacity of up to 5 MW and a hydrogen refueling station for buses and heavy commercial vehicles, the report said.

Karl Schultheis, Head of New Business Development at Energiequelle Finland, says: “If market conditions are right, we expect the first phase to be completed in 2028.

However, this is a major industrial project and investment, so the planning reservations we are receiving now are only a first step towards making a concrete investment decision. For a project of this size, planning and studies always need to be well thought out.”

Energiquelle revealed that in the next phase, the plant’s capacity will be increased to 10-50 MW, with the possibility of exporting hydrogen through the planned hydrogen pipeline and the port of Oulu if the required infrastructure is in place, adding that in the third phase, production will be further increased to an additional 100-500 MW of capacity.
