India’s first hydrogen-powered train begins test runs

India’s first hydrogen-powered train began its trial run today on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Manufactured by Integrated Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, the eco-friendly train marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation in India. The train, which can travel at speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, consists of a passenger car and two additional cars dedicated to hydrogen storage.

To support the operation of the hydrogen-powered train, Indian Railways plans to set up integrated hydrogen production, storage and refueling facilities. The Railway Minister confirmed that the necessary safety approvals have been obtained from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO).
With the first hydrogen-powered train operated by the Northern Railway, India is moving towards carbon neutrality. The plan is in line with the Modi government’s broader vision of energy-efficient transportation under the Hydrogen in Railways initiative.
